The SAP Basis Plug-In is backward compatible and follows the release and maintenance strategy of the SAP R/3 Plug-In. SAP ships it together with the SAP R/3 Plug-In.
Hosting environments and third-party offerings have also contributed to these improvements. Public cloud environments such as Azure and AWS provide a layer of abstraction that eliminates the difficult task of maintaining the hardware that was required with SAP on-premises.

SAP HANA base administrators can master the database in a way that wasn't possible back then. The SAP database is much more self-healing.
